John Talbott gave a presentation called: “Ecovillages and Sustainable Community: Findhorn, Scotland” It was inspiring, entertaining and of great relevance to our project. John helped develop Findhorn, a world-first centre for modern sustainable community in the far north of Scotland. At present, he lives in Sydney with his wife Samantha Graham (and son Taran) and we are very lucky to have their interest and counsel.

DVD’s are now available so please register if you haven't already and we will make sure you receive a copy asap. 01/03/2006 - Land Hunt Status

We are looking for land suitable to develop a sustainable village of about 100 households and thank you to those who have already given us some ideas about where to look.

The Greenedge team, who are developing Somerville Ecovillage outside Perth, were in town last weekend (some of you met Dominic, Paul & Neil at our November launch) to add their expertise and enthusiasm to our land hunt. We travelled south and looked at 13 properties in the shires of Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven. Going north is also under consideration and David and I have a lead north this weekend.

We selected properties about 2 hours from Sydney in accordance with your preferences through our initial survey. It was a very successful weekend and as we formally rated and ranked the various properties according to important ecovillage criteria, we generated much clarity and understanding.

As a result of the weekend, we are approaching several agents with a 7 point ‘Land Requirement List’ outlining clearly what we require in a parcel of land. (see below)

Feel free to let us know about any leads to follow in relation to land purchase – no matter how small and to forward this request to people that you feel may have even a smidgeon of interest in the project.

We are moving with you along this pretty interesting journey and process and just… seeing what comes, and if last weekend is any indication, it’s going to be a lot of fun!

Land Requirement List:

  1. butting up to urban settlement

  2. not more that 3-5kms from a town or centre

  3. min about 60 ha (150 acres)

  4. 15 – 20 ha of flat to undulating land

  5. min 30% uncleared land

  6. degraded land is not a problem

  7. budget $1˝m - $5m
